Still here

The sightings have actually increased. I have no doubt that there will be a confrontation between the Plague Doctor and me sometime soon.

The patients I mentioned in my last post have been sent on their way. It’s just me now. Once again, I will keep you updated if anything new happens.

Another tip

I never really thought of this until a woman brought it up a couple weeks ago. It slipped my mind until now. If you’re a female runner, and you don’t want to deal with cramps, bloating, etc. You can probably get free or at least reduced price birth control pills from certain clinics and Planned Parenthood centers (if there are any in your area). Since birth control pills work on a 21/7 rotation (21 days of active hormones, and a week of dummy pills), you can skip your period by skipping the dummy pills and starting the next cycle of pills early.

Since the bleeding you experience at the end of a birth control cycle is actually withdrawal bleeding and not an actual period, it doesn’t seriously affect your health to skip it.

The only warning I would issue a regular patient is that skipping periods like this may lead to a buildup of iron which could increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. However, this case is probably the only one in which I would say that being able to Run effectively and quickly is a higher priority than long-term heart health.

THE CLINIC IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

There have been sightings of the Plague Doctor around the clinic, so I am closing the clinic down until it cools down. I don’t know if it’s because of the runners coming through here or the spike in intelligence because of the blog or a bit of both. In any case, I’m not about to risk anyone.

I’ve still got a couple of patients in my care, so I will continue to care for them until they are healthy enough to leave. However, I will not be accepting any new patients. No matter how bad it is. I would rather you chance the emergency room. Even if I can promise I am not compromised, just being around the Plague Doctor can cause complications. If you would like, I can give you recommendations to hospitals that I think are clean if you email me.

Please, if you happen to meet anyone that may be headed here or knows about my clinic at all, make sure they know this. Tell them to keep away and find another place to seek medical treatment.

I will do my best to keep you updated.

Emotionally compromised

I asked that child if she would like to stay where it is relatively safe and be my assistant after she had recovered enough to be off of pain medications. She was gone in the morning.

I’ve been told several times that I let my emotions take hold too often. It may be true. Perhaps if the girl had stayed she would have attracted whatever she is running from.  But I can’t keep my emotions out of my work. I refuse to let my patients become things. I have sworn my life to protecting and healing these people.

I see them all as my own children, and I would gladly give my life to ensure their safety.

The worst cases

I just got through treating a young girl. She had two broken ribs, comminuted fractures on both her tibia and fibula of her left leg, and a displaced oblique fracture on her right radius. She also had many bruises and lacerations over her entire body. I got her bones set, patched up the rest of her, and gave her some pain meds.

She couldn’t be more than 17 years old. She wouldn’t give me her name, and I wouldn’t post it here if she did. She also wouldn’t tell me how she got her injuries. I imagine it was the result of a run-in with some sort of proxy. The full deal wouldn’t have left her alive. She’d been dropped off at my door by some anonymous helper.

This is what I hate about my job. This is what I hate about these things in general. They always (or nearly always) go after kids. I’ve seen maybe on person over the age of 25 in my clinic. They’re mostly around their early twenties, but I’ve had kids as young as 14 and 15 come through my doors. It’s terrible.
I do not understand why these creatures choose to attack children. They are the most innocent of people. But maybe that is why.

May Shashthi look over them keep them safe.

Tip from a patient

I was asking my patients for tips they would give to early runners, and I got this little gem:

Free continental breakfasts from cheap hotels are surprisingly easy to take advantage of. You don’t really need to get a room there as long as you look somewhat decent, and you get lots of free food. Some of which you can even load up on.

I’m going to add that a lot of the food served at these continental breakfasts is perishable, so don’t load up on them too much. They’ll go bad, and you’ll just end up weighing yourself down.
