I never really thought of this until a woman brought it up a
couple weeks ago. It slipped my mind until now. If you’re a female runner, and
you don’t want to deal with cramps, bloating, etc. You can probably get free or
at least reduced price birth control pills from certain clinics and Planned Parenthood
centers (if there are any in your area). Since birth control pills work on a
21/7 rotation (21 days of active hormones, and a week of dummy pills), you can
skip your period by skipping the dummy pills and starting the next cycle of
pills early.
Since the bleeding you experience at the end of a birth
control cycle is actually withdrawal bleeding and not an actual period, it
doesn’t seriously affect your health to skip it.
The only warning I would issue a regular patient is that
skipping periods like this may lead to a buildup of iron which could increase
your risk of cardiovascular disease. However, this case is probably the only
one in which I would say that being able to Run effectively and quickly is a
higher priority than long-term heart health.
